Today, weight management has become a national public health priority that can no longer be ignored.

Obesity: A High-Risk Warning Signal for Chronic Health Problems

Abnormal weight is a major risk factor for hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and fatty liver. Obesity results from a combination of genetic, environmental, metabolic, and behavioral factors, and its cyclical interaction with chronic low-grade inflammation creates a vicious cycle.

Traditional theories attribute weight gain to an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, influenced by individual constitution and genetics. However, recent studies have uncovered the critical role of the gut microbiota in weight regulation.

A well-known experiment using germ-free mice investigated the causal relationship between gut microbiota and weight change. When germ-free mice received transplants of gut microbiota from genetically obese mice and lean mice, respectively, those receiving the "obese microbiota" gained significantly more weight. This demonstrated that gut microbiota alone can alter body weight, providing scientific evidence for using probiotics to manage obesity.

Among the many probiotics associated with weight regulation, Bifidobacterium breve B-3 stands out for its excellent human affinity, safety, and promising anti-obesity potential. Over the past decade, research has clarified the mechanisms by which B-3 supports weight management.

High-fat diets are widely known to induce metabolic endotoxemia, gut barrier dysfunction, and metabolic disorders-all accompanied by shifts in the gut microbial composition. Clinical Evidence of Morinaga Bifidobacterium breve B-3

B-3 is supported by an extensive body of clinical research, including five high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Studies demonstrate that B-3 not only safely and effectively reduces body fat but also reduces body weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference.

In one trial involving 80 adults with a BMI of 25–30 kg/m², participants consumed 20 billion CFU/day. The B-3 group showed significantly lower body fat mass and body fat percentage than the placebo group (P<0.05). Waist circumference was significantly below baseline by week 12 (P<0.01). Interestingly, while body fat decreased, muscle mass tended to increase and was significantly higher than placebo at week 8 (P<0.05), earning B-3 the reputation of a "fat-loss and muscle-support" strain.

A 2023 study involving 83 adults with a BMI of 25–30 kg/m² randomly assigned participants to receive 5 billion CFU/day of B-3 or a placebo for 12 weeks. Results showed that body weight and BMI in the B-3 group were significantly lower than in the placebo group. The B-3 group exhibited a meaningful reduction in body fat mass, while no significant change was observed in the placebo group. After 12 weeks, both waist and hip circumferences in the B-3 group were significantly reduced compared to placebo (as shown in Figure 2).
